Our Playground

Come Play!

“The more risks you allow children to take, the better they learn to take care of themselves.”

– Roald Dahl

The outdoor space at St. Columba’s Nursery School truly sets us apart and is frequently described by our families as “magical“. Offering a shaded respite from city life, our beautiful, expansive playgrounds and campus provide an incredible backdrop for children’s exploration, active play, gross motor development, creativity, problem solving, collaboration, and “safe” risk-taking.

With the financial support of our school community, our playground underwent a major renovation in the Summer of 2024, during which customized play structures, swing sets, a turf, bike path, and sheds were installed to enrich the outdoor space for our preschoolers. Our sheds house a variety of enticing play equipment, spanning from bikes and scooters, to shovels, sand toys, rakes, and sleds. We have something for everyone!

In a digital era, we value and understand the importance of time spent outdoors. This is beneficial for the bodies and minds of children and adults. As such, we spend ample time outside every day. Our cubbies are lined with rain boots and rain coats for the rainy days and snow boots and suits during the winter months. While time spent outside varies based on a child’s age and length of school day, every child spends at least 1.5-2 hours outside each day and in many cases, even more!

Did we mention that we have chickens?! Our resident hens, Cece and Blondie were hatched by our preschoolers in 2021 and further add to the relaxed and nurturing atmosphere of the outdoor experience.
